Salado is a town in Bell County, Texas, United States. Salado was first incorporated in 1867 for the sole purpose of building a bridge across Salado Creek. In 2000, the citizens of Salado voted in favor of reincorporation, before which it was a census-designated place. The population of the village was 2,126 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Killeen&ndash;Temple&ndash;Fort Hood Metropolitan Statistical Area. Archaeological evidence of a paleolithic Native American settlement dating back about 15,500 years, the Buttermilk Creek Complex, has been unearthed in Salado. The first record of white settlers in the area occurred in 1834, but by 1836, the pioneer settlers abandoned the area due to frequent Indian attacks and the invasion by General Santa Anna and the Mexican Army. The first permanent Anglo-American settler at Salado was Archibald Willingham in 1850. In 1852, the Salado Post Office was established. In 1859, the Salado College Joint Stock Company was created by Col. Elijah Sterling Clack Robertson, who donated 320 acres north and south of the springs to be broken into lots and form the village of Salado, with the proceeds of the sale going to form Salado College. The college operated from 1860-1885 and 1895-1913; the former college building was occupied by the Thomas Arnold High School. From 1866 to 1885, the famous Chisholm Trail cattle drives passed through this area, with the Stagecoach Inn being one of the stops. In 1867, Salado incorporated to build a bridge across Salado Creek. By 1884, Salado had a population of 900, seven churches, 14 stores, two hotels, two blacksmiths, and three cotton gins. However, after the railroads bypassed Salado to the north and south, trade moved away from the town and the population began to dwindle, hitting 400 by 1914 and down to 200 by 1950.[5][6] Nineteen Salado locations are listed in the National Register of Historic Places, including the George Washington Baines House.

The city's official slogan promotes Austin as "The Live Music Capital of the World", a reference to the city's many musicians and live music venues, as well as the long-running&nbsp;PBS&nbsp;TV concert series&nbsp;Austin City Limits.&nbsp;The city also adopted "Silicon Hills" as a nickname in the 1990s due to a rapid influx of technology and development companies. In recent years, some Austinites have adopted the unofficial slogan "Keep Austin Weird",&nbsp;which refers to the desire to protect small, unique, and local businesses from being overrun by large corporations.&nbsp;Since the late 19th century, Austin has also been known as the "City of the Violet Crown", because of the colorful glow of light across the hills just after sunset.
In 1987, Austin originated and remains the site for&nbsp;South by Southwest&nbsp;(stylized as SXSW and colloquially referred to as&nbsp;South By), an annual conglomeration of parallel&nbsp;film,&nbsp;interactive media, and&nbsp;music festivals&nbsp;and&nbsp;conferences that take place in mid-March. Emerging from a strong economic focus on government and education, since the 1990s, Austin has become a center for technology and business. A number of&nbsp;Fortune 500&nbsp;companies have headquarters or regional offices in Austin, including&nbsp;3M,&nbsp;Advanced Micro Devices (AMD).

Temple is a city in Bell County, Texas, United States. As of 2019, the city has a population of 78,439 according to a US census estimate, making it the second largest of Bell County's three principal cities after Killeen. Located near the county seat of Belton, Temple lies in the region referred to as Central Texas and is a principal city in the Killeen &ndash; Temple &ndash; Fort Hood metropolitan area, which as of 2015 had a population of 450,051.[6] Located off Interstate 35, Temple is 65 miles (105 km) north of Austin, 34 miles (55 km) south of Waco and 27 miles east of Killeen. The primary economic drivers are the extensive medical community (mostly due to Baylor Scott &amp; White Medical Center &ndash; Temple) and goods distribution based on its central location between the Dallas-Fort Worth, San Antonio, and Houston metropolitan areas, and proximity to larger neighbors Austin and Waco.

San Marcos is a city and the county seat of Hays County, Texas, United States. The city's limits extend into Caldwell and Guadalupe Counties, as well. San Marcos is within the Austin&ndash;Round Rock&ndash;San Marcos metropolitan area and on the Interstate 35 corridor between Austin and San Antonio. Its population was 44,894 at the 2010 census and was an estimated 64,776 in 2019. Founded on the banks of the San Marcos River, the area is thought to be among the oldest continuously inhabited sites in the Americas. San Marcos is home to Texas State University and the Meadows Center for Water and the Environment. In 2010, San Marcos was listed in Business Week's fourth annual survey of the "Best Places to Raise your Kids". In 2013 and 2014, the United States Census Bureau named it the fastest-growing city in the United States. In December 2013, it was named number nine on Business Insider's list of the "10 Most Exciting Small Cities In America".

Georgetown is a city in central Texas. Buildings in its Downtown Historic District include the Victorian-era Old Williamson County Jail and the 1911 Courthouse. The Williamson Museum explores local history. East, Southwestern University is known for its Fountainwood Observatory. Blue Hole Park features a lagoon along the San Gabriel River. To the south, Inner Space Cavern is a vast cave with hundreds of stalactites.

Georgetown

Belton is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, within the Killeen-Temple metropolitan area. The city is on the Interstate 35 corridor between Austin and Waco and is the seat of Bell County. The population was 22,885 in 2019 according to a US Census Estimate. As of 2019 the metro region had a population of 450,051. Although the county seat and a sizable city itself, Belton is by far the smallest of the three principal cities in Bell County, even appearing as more of a suburb of Temple. Belton and&nbsp;Bell County&nbsp;have been the site of human habitation since at least 6000 BC. Evidence of early inhabitants, including campsites, kitchen middens and burial mounds from the late prehistoric era have been discovered in the&nbsp;Stillhouse Hollow Lake&nbsp;and&nbsp;Belton Lake&nbsp;areas. The earliest identifiable inhabitants were the&nbsp;Tonkawa, who traditionally followed buffalo by foot. Belton was also home to the&nbsp;Lipan Apache,&nbsp;Wacos,&nbsp;Nadaco,&nbsp;Kiowas&nbsp;and&nbsp;Comanche. By the 1840s most tribes had been pushed out by settlements, but skirmishes with the Commanches existed until the early 1870s.
Belton was first settled 1850 and named Nolanville, taking the name of nearby Nolan Springs which were named for Texan explorer&nbsp;Philip Nolan. In 1851, it changed its name to Belton after being named the county seat of newly created&nbsp;Bell County&nbsp;named after&nbsp;Peter Hansborough Bell, the&nbsp;Governor of Texas&nbsp;at that time. In 1860, the population was 300, the largest in the county. During the run up to the civil war, Belton had a large pro-Union minority. A Whig Party paper and anti-secession paper called "The Independent" was published there and the city voted overwhelmingly for&nbsp;Sam Houston&nbsp;for governor, who was strongly against Texas secession.&nbsp;Nonetheless, in 1861 Bell County voted for secession and many residents fought in the Confederate Army. After the civil war, Belton experienced unrest. Several pro-union sympathizers were lynched in 1866 and Federal troops were called in to protect the Federal Judge serving in the city. After&nbsp;Reconstruction, the city, close to a major feeder of the&nbsp;Chisholm Trail, served as growing business center for the region.
As of the&nbsp;census&nbsp;of 2000, there were 14,623 people, 4,742 households, and 3,319 families residing in the city. The&nbsp;population density&nbsp;was 1,171.3 people per square mile (452.4/km2). There were 5,089 housing units at an average density of 407.6 per square mile (157.4/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 72.67%&nbsp;White, 8.10%&nbsp;African American, 0.64%&nbsp;Native American, 0.95%&nbsp;Asian, 0.10%&nbsp;Pacific Islander, 14.83% from&nbsp;other races, and 2.71% from two or more races.&nbsp;Hispanic&nbsp;or&nbsp;Latino of any race were 25.13% of the population. There were 4,742 households, out of which 37.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.9% were&nbsp;married couples living together, 16.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.0% were non-families. 24.6% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.23. In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.9% under the age of 18, 18.4% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 17.1% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 28 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.4 males.

Belton

Round Rock is a city near Austin, Texas. It's known for its outdoor activities and historic sites. The Round Rock, a large stone in Brushy Creek, marks the site where wagons made low-water crossings in the 19th century. Nearby, Chisholm Trail Crossing Park has plaques detailing the city’s cattle-driving history. Old Settlers Park includes baseball fields, playgrounds, a disc golf course, and a fish-stocked lake. The city straddles the&nbsp;Balcones Escarpment,&nbsp;a fault line in which the areas roughly east of&nbsp;Interstate 35&nbsp;are flat and characterized by having black, fertile soils of the&nbsp;Blackland Prairie, and the west side of the Escarpment, which consists mostly of hilly,&nbsp;karst-like&nbsp;terrain with little topsoil and higher elevations and which is part of the&nbsp;Texas Hill Country. Located about 20 miles (32&nbsp;km) north of downtown Austin, Round Rock shares a common border with&nbsp;Austin&nbsp;at&nbsp;Texas State Highway 45. In August 2008,&nbsp;Money&nbsp;named Round Rock as the seventh-best American small city in which to live.&nbsp;Round Rock was the only Texas city to make the Top 10. In a CNN article dated July 1, 2009, Round Rock was listed as the second-fastest-growing city in the country, with a population growth of 8.2% in the preceding year. According to the 2008 ratings from the Texas Education Agency, the&nbsp;Round Rock Independent School District&nbsp;ranks among the best in the state. Of 42 schools within it, 12 were rated exemplary and 11 were recognized. Round Rock is perhaps best known as the international headquarters of&nbsp;Dell Technologies, which employs about 16,000 people at its Round Rock facilities.&nbsp;The presence of Dell along with other major employers,&nbsp;an economic development program, major retailers such as&nbsp;IKEA, a&nbsp;Premium Outlet Mall, and the mixed-use&nbsp;La Frontera&nbsp;center, have changed Round Rock from a sleepy&nbsp;bedroom community&nbsp;into its own self-contained "super suburb".

Marble Falls was founded by Adam Rankin Johnson in 1887, a former Indian fighter and Confederate general, known as "Stovepipe" Johnson for his Civil War escapades, which included duping the Union army in Newburgh, Indiana, with fake "cannons," constructed from stovepipes and wagon wheels. Johnson had viewed the natural Marble Falls during his pre-war days as a Burnet County surveyor, and had dreamed of building an industrial city, powered by the tumbling Colorado River, not to be confused with the river of the same name in Colorado and Arizona. Despite a "friendly fire" incident which blinded him near the end of the Civil War, General Johnson followed through with his dream, facilitating the construction of a railroad to nearby Granite Mountain in 1884, then (with ten partners, including one son, one nephew and two sons-in-law) platting the townsite and selling lots, beginning July 12, 1887. Johnson built a fine home, a college (soon to be home of the "Falls on the Colorado Museum") and a large factory near the falls. The town grew to a population of 1,800 within ten years. Marble Falls made history in 1917 by electing Ophelia Crosby "Birdie" Harwood as the first woman mayor in Texas, three years before women were allowed to vote. When the Max Starcke Dam was completed in 1951, the marble falls which had given the town its name were submerged under the new Lake Marble Falls. While the town's economy struggled through the drought of the 1950s, a new economy based on tourism and retirement began to grow in the 1970s. During the last thirty years, Marble Falls has grown into the retail and entertainment center for the Highland Lakes area, and continues to attract tourists, retirees and new businesses

Burnet is a city in and the county seat of Burnet County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,987 at the 2010 census. Both the city and the county were named for David Gouverneur Burnet, the first president of the Republic of Texas.
